Summer is my favorite season of the year. I love the warm rays of the sun and the longer days. Everyone is outside and there is so much to do. There are oceans, parks, and forests to explore. Soon, however, this is going to change. The air is going to get cooler and the daylight is going to get shorter. For sure, fall is a beautiful season with its brilliant colors and crisp air, and Thanksgiving and Christmas are wonderful times with family and friends. But, somehow, I always feel sad when summer's close draws near. I will miss it, and I want to enjoy every day that we have left.
The changing seasons remind us of our ever changing lives. It seems that just when you get settled, everything changes again. The company downsizes, family members get sick, and the kids go back to college. I'm sure there are times in all of our lives when circumstances are just as we want them to be, and we wish they could stay that way. But, they don't. It will not always be summer. Everyone will not always be young. Your friends will not always be near. The wise thing to do is to make the most of the opportunity you've been given now.
Perhaps, you're reading this post today, because someone told you about this new church starting in the city. Maybe, they even told you about the new life you can have, because of Jesus. What will you do with this opportunity you've been given?
The Bible records an historical encounter between the apostle Paul and the Roman governor of Israel, Felix, in approx. 55 A.D. Speaking of Felix, the Scripture says, "...and sent for Paul and heard him speak about faith in Christ Jesus. But as he was discussing righteousness, self-control and the judment to come, Felix became frightened and said, 'Go away for the present, and when I find time I will summon you'"(Acts 24:25). The verses that follow in this chapter indicate that Felix conversed with Paul often over the next two years, but he never did put his faith in Jesus as far as we know. One of the saddest verses in the Bible documents the sorrow of those who have rejected God as their King. It says, "Harvest is past, summer is ended, and we are not saved" (Jeremiah 8:20).
